Am Ende seiner Promotion im Jahr 1951 trat Wise als Dozent an die London School of Economics (Universität London) ein und wurde 1954 Sir Ernest Cassel Reader in Economic Geography und 1958-1983 Professor. Wise war Mitglied und Präsident vieler gelehrter Gesellschaften, darunter die British Association for the Advancement of Science, die Transport Studies Society, die International Geographical Union, die Geographical Association und die Royal Geographical Society.
