Some of the most seminal works of Western Music were issued by the Berlin firm of Schlesinger, founded in April 1810 by Adolf Martin, later managed by his youngest son Heinrich, from 1831 (at first with his mother Philippine, and from 1844 alone). Among the many thousands of publications by hundreds of composers itemised in these volumes, some stand out particularly: Bach's St. Matthew Passion (publisher's number 1570), Beethoven's piano sonatas opp.110 and 111 (numbers 1159-1160) and the late string quartets opp.132 and 135 (1443 and 1444). Another composer whose publications bulk large here is Weber, the rights for whose works were secured by Schlesinger in August 1814. In 1864 the firm was sold to Robert Lienau (see lot 131), whose hand can also been seen in e.g. the second catalogue listed above.
