Promotion 1970 LMU München und dort bis 1973 Akademischer Oberrat. 1973-1974 Habilitation zum Dr. rer. pol. habil. bevor er 1975 im Fach Geographie habilitierte. Bis 1976 war er als Privatdozent tätig und folgte anschließend einem Ruf als Professor an das Wirtschaftsgeographische Institut der LMU. 1977 bis 2008 Professor und Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Wirtschaftsgeographie und Regionalplanung an der Universität Bayreuth.
